The days are getting longer

Finally had a day last week where the skies were clear and daylight lasted long enough for the afterschool walk to be fully bright. It always seems like the daylight changes are most noticeable in February. By March I start feeling like winter was just a fever dream and then the next time I really think about daylight is when June rolls around and we’re rudely reminded of this whole cycle business.

The dogs and I celebrated the day by walking to the waterfall at Mendenhall Glacier. It’s pretty different in the winter than in the summer. For one, almost everyone has a dog in the winter. In the summer, everyone has a cruise ship pass. The snow was compacted in only a narrow path, so passing all the other people required someone hopping off the trail into the deep snow. My dogs never perceived they should be the ones to do this, so there was a bit of dragging on my part. They’re so small they don’t even sink in, so there’s really no excuse.

For a few minutes we were rewarded with that delicious winter feeling of being warm despite the temperature.
